Lavishly adorned with 22-carat gold gilding. These really are beautiful pieces. The owls seem to be a depiction of a Spotted Owl owl resting on the base of an old tree hollow.
The Daybreak Owl is adorned with honeysuckle whilst the Twilight Owl is adorned with ivy. The Spotted Owl is a strictly nighttime owl, and the sweet scent and fruit of honeysuckle attracts some of its favourite prey - bats, both the adult and caterpillar (here shown with eye spots to scare off predators) of the Elephant Hawk Moth. Ivy is a welcome shade during the day, but numerous small creatures appear at twilight.
Bats are depicted Chinese style in sky blue V shapes. Honeysuckle and ivy are true wildlife hotels. The almost black eyes of the Daybreak Owl are heavily lidded, showing that it's time to go to sleep! The wide open eyes of the Twilight Owl brightly and fascinatingly show the rising quarter moon. Modelled in 2011 and 12 by Robert Tabbenor.
